The Friends of Cape May Jazz, the sponsoring organization of the semi-annual Cape May Jazz Festival, announces the election of a new slate of officers and directors for the coming 2010-2011 season. Gene Boyd was elected to the post of president. Formerly the organizations treasurer, Boyd has owned and managed several radio stations, and has been involved my various aspects of the music business. He has also been an active volunteer with many local non-profits, including the Center for Community Arts, MAC, and the United Way of Cape May County.
Veteran broadcaster Rick Dee becomes the new first vice-president. He has been actively involved with the past 30 festivals. Dee formerly owned a chain of music retail stores and has produced and staged many concerts and events.
Retired business executive Oscar Johnson, a long time executive board member moves into the position of second vice-president. Johnson will concentrate his business skills in the area of fund raising. Educator, and popular jazz vocalist and recording artist Lois Smith becomes the organizations third vice-president. Smith has also served on the executive board of FCMJ for many years.
Outgoing Cape May Councilperson Linda Steenrod joins the slate as secretary. Steenrod is a local bed and breakfast owner, and is active in a number of community organizations. Kathleen Varallo takes over the role of treasurer. She has a back ground with non-profit groups having served as executive director for Bay Atlantic Symphony and currently executive director of Cape May Forum. Phil Pizzi, on air personality at WCZT, Wildwood, and outgoing board president will serve as member at large along with attorney H. Parker Smith and Cape May business woman Bonnie Mullock.
The Friends of Cape May Jazz have tapped Rick Dee as the new program director. “Rick's years in the music business, his experience in putting on concerts, shows, and events, and his close relationship with many outstanding jazz musicians, makes him an ideal choice to put together the 34th Cape May Jazz Festival" stated FCMJ president Gene Boyd. “He has been actively involved in the planning and execution of the last 30 festivals" Boyd went on to say, “and he has a great feel of what the Cape May Jazz Festival is all about."
