As Ben Allison states in the liner notes of his outstanding 2006 CD, Cowboy Justice, “New band. New music. The inspiration for this quartet album was twofold. I wanted to try my hand at writing for an ensemble that was smaller than my others. The instrumentation of trumpet, guitar, bass and drums was new for me and posed certain orchestrational challenges. Plus I wanted to rock. And nothing really rocks like guitar, trumpet, bass and drums."
