Lucrecia

Lucrecia is a talented singer which, after having established some impressive artistic credentials, is finally garnering some well deserved international recognition.

Born in the El Vedado (Havana, Cuba) and raised in Guanabacoa, Lucrecia began her musical studies at age 6 with a concentration in piano at El Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba (The Superior Institute of Art in Cuba). She would go on to receive numerous awards for her musical development as her studies progressed.

Lucrecia received public recognition when she became the lead vocalist and keyboard player for the famous Cuban all-female orchestra Anacaona. In 1993, she gained wider recognition in Cuba when her songs became part of the Hit Parade played on radio and television. In 1994 she released her first album in Spain “Me debes un beso,”for which she was the producer and musical director.

She went on to release “Prohibido” (1996), “Mis Boleros,” (1996) "Pronósticos” (1997) “Cubáname” (1999) "Agua” (2002) “Mira Las Luces” (2006) and her recent “Álbum de Cuba” (2009) for which she was nominated for the Grammy’s for Best Tropical Music Album, competing with veterans Juan Luis Guerra and Johnny Ventura, among others.

In 2003, she was well known for her participation for the soundtrack of the Oscar-nominated documentary film Balseros. From that soundtrack, her song “La Noche de la Iguana” was dedicated to oppressed people all over the world.

In 1999, Lucrecia made her debut as an actress in the film Ataque Verbal (1999, directed by Miguel Albadalejo). She has also appeared in Segunda piel (1999), El Gran Gato (2003), and the children’s program Los Lunnis (2003-2009). In addition to her musical and theatrical credits she has also written a children’s book called Besitos de chocolate. Cuentos de mi infancia [Little Chocolate Kisses: Stories from my Childhood] published by El Aleph in 2006.

Lucrecia is currently residing in Spain, and is reviving the role of Cuban legend Celia Cruz, in a musical based on the singers life, aptly named Celia! Source: Ivette Romero
