Kahil El’Zabar's Ritual Trio: Follow the Sun
I tempi dell'Etnic Heritage Ensemble, col suo polistrumentismo spinto e colorato, la sua ricerca delle radici attraverso una chiave comunque sperimentale, sono ormai per Kahil El'Zabar un ricordo. Quest'ultimo lavoro del suo Ritual Trio (gruppo peraltro a sua volta decisamente attempato, di cui nello specifico Payne e Trible risultano ospiti), inciso a Chicago nell'aprile 2013, ce lo dice con una certa chiarezza.

Se infatti vi sopravvive la tendenza a immettere comunque nella musica elementi esotizzanti (per esempio kalimba e cornamusa in "Great Black Music," guarda caso), a sottolineare con una certa enfasi (più di un tempo, certamente) la componente ritmico-ritualistica (nonché tribale), tutto appare oggi svuotato, appunto, dei pruriti di allora, non senza riferimenti al Sun Ra (almeno questa è l'impressione che si ricava in vari frangenti lungo le pieghe del disco) più rintanato nella propria maniera, autocelebrativo.

C'è poi l'elemento vocale, diviso tra Dwight Tribe (prevalente) e lo stesso El'Zabar (in un paio di episodi in coppia), a fare la musica verbosa, troppo riciclativa, pesante (e anche un po' pedante), malgrado gli sforzi, in particolare, dei due tenoristi, che regalano assoli spesso ispirati, anche se a loro volta talora un po' prolissi ed effettistici.
