Tamco: Don't Think Twice
Il nome più noto (si fa per dire) è quello della cantante Tammy Payne che opera dai primi anni novanta nell'underground musicale di Bristol come alcuni dei colleghi di questo gruppo. Nel passato ha operato (anche come batterista e autrice) sull'onda del fenomeno acid jazz in differenti contesti (PJ Harvery, Mckay, Smith and Mighty) e guidato il gruppo Jukes (di cui consigliamo il sorprendente We Might Disappear).
Il disco in esame è il debutto del quintetto Tamco formato da altri nomi significativi di quell'area: il chitarrista Neil Smith (Liftmen), il bassista Jim Barr (Portishead), l'organista Dan Moore (Andy Sheppard, Maceo Parker, Pee Wee Ellis) e il batterista Dylan Howe (Nick Cave, Robert Wyatt, Portishead, Paul McCartney).
La formazione rilegge con avvincente intensità una serie di celebri pezzi di Dolly Parton, Elvis Costello, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Jacques Brel e altri rivestendoli di un clima ora spettrale, ora ossessivo, a cui si aggiungono le venature acide della chitarra ed un drumming spesso concitato. Su tutto svetta la voce soulful di Tammy Payne che in "River Deep Mountain High" trova il pezzo di maggior presa commerciale ma sa evidenziare altre qualità nel corso del disco.
La più evidente è il melisma desolato e disadorno, in grado di trasmettere la stessa inquietudine che può dare la fruizione de "I Nottambuli" di Edward Hopper. Se volessimo trovare referenti espressivi più specifici vengono subito alla mente Rickie Lee Jones e per certi aspetti Patty Smith.
I brani che abbiamo più apprezzato sono il jazzistico "Henry Lee," l'intensa versione di "I Want You" di Elvis Costello, trasformato in un' intensa ballad notturna e la rilettura di "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" di Bob Dylan.
