Cynthia Felton: Come Sunday - The Music of Duke Ellington

Un disco del genere è di quelli che ci fa chiedere dove va il jazz oggi. Sia per la musica che contiene che per le modalità di produzione. L'ennesima autoproduzione (di questi tempi sempre più numerose). Ma stavolta con ben quattro sezioni ritmiche più ospiti, voce registrata ai Capitols Studios di Hollywood ed un grande lavoro in sede di missaggio. Non è che tutti possono permettersi uno spiegamento del genere per stamparsi un disco!

Il Duca scriveva la musica e la faceva interpretare dai grandi solisti che aveva a disposizione. Oggi la Felton arrangia quelle composizioni adeguandole ogni volta al tipo di musicisti che sceglie. Fortunatamente fa tutto con molta perizia rifuggendo da operazioni filologiche ed in questo conferma di essere una musicista di tutto rispetto nel panorama internazionale.

Già l'inizio è di quelli forti: "I Don't Mean a Thing if It Ain't Got that Swing" è un brano in cui lei parte insieme alla batteria di Terry Lyne Carrington, cui soltanto dopo si aggiungono il pianoforte di Patrice Rushen ed il contrabbasso di Tony Dumas. È un arrangiamento audace, che si fa ascoltare con attenzione. Subito dopo uno dei momenti più interessanti dell'album: "Caravan," con le intriganti percussioni etniche di Munyoungo Jackson e, dopo il tema, un'escursione su territori modali in cui l'ospite Ernie Watts si presenta con un avvincente assolo dal taglio moderno.

"In a Mellow Tone" è un` altra occasione in cui la Felton sa mettersi in mostra, accompagnata dal contrabbasso di Ryan Criss. Il cambio delle ritmiche e gli ospiti nei tredici brani, tutti di Duke Ellington e dei suoi collaboratori, rendono il disco molto interessante, suggestivo anche per le atmosfere moderne che vi trovano posto e che dimostrano come il Duca e la sua musica siano senza tempo e possano ispirare gli arrangiatori di oggi.
