I britannici ACV, qui alla loro seconda prova dopo l'ottimo esordio di Fall in Wood del 2010, fanno il botto e danno alle stampe una felice collezione di otto brani che faranno felici gli appassionati di un certo jazz d'oltremanica che rifulge di nobili ascendenze canterburiane.

Il quintetto, guidato dal contrabbassista-compositore Andy Champion, guida l'ascoltatore in un viaggio delle meraviglie dove spuntano di continuo dotti rimandi: si parte con la lirica "Nutmeg State," che non avrebbe sfigurato nel secondo album dei Gilgamesh del compianto Alan Gowen, per proseguire con "Degree Absolute," feroce cavalcata free che mette in luce l'ottimo Samson Schmitt al tenore, e stupire con "Second Season," delicata ballad introdotta da un sax alla Bobby Wellins, un ulteriore saggio del talento compositivo del buon Champion.

Ma la prova regina che incorona Busk come un'opera da non perdere è la cinematica "Never Ever," avvolgente ballad introdotta dal suono grave del contrabbasso suonato con l'arco da Champion e che si sviluppa in un crescendo che coinvolge tutti i membri del quintetto, compreso l'ottimo Mark Williams alla chitarra elettrica che sfodera un tono ruvido molto efficace. Da citare, d'obbligo, anche gli altri due membri del quintetto ancora non menzionati: il tastierista Paul Edis, già collaboratore di Tony Kofi, Tim Garland e Julian Siegel, e il batterista Adrian Tilbrook, ex Back Door, capace di infondere sprazzi di swing anche nei contesti meno canonici.

In conclusione, un album brillante e raffinato, caratterizzato da timbri, umori e vibrazioni elettroacustiche che si credevano perdute.
