With this program of original compositions, vibraphonist Matthias Lupri takes his modern mainstream sextet through a series of musical adventures. Along with the standard timbres of an intense unit from today's contemporary jazz scene, he also employs electronic ideas to season the session with an added flair.
(Another) Lost Creek, Dream Nocturne, Time Design, Wondering & Wandering and other longer selections serve as the album's benchmarks. They're augmented by brief interlude pieces that seamlessly connect Lupri's themes. These ...

While Same Time Twice (Summit, 2002) found vibraphonist Matthias Lupri emerging as a noteworthy contemporary jazz composer, Transition Sonic (Summit, 2004) represented a significant compositional leap. Lupri fashioned a suite of pieces that, while generally unrelated thematically, ultimately created a longer, more complex narrative whose whole was greater than the sum of its parts. With Metalix Lupri continues honing that process.
This album bears some comparison to Pat Metheny Group's The Way Up (Nonesuch, 2005). Not to say ...

This CD, featuring a sextet, is best heard straight through in order to savor its intent and its beauty. It is a 12-part suite of related compositions. Soloing that comes straight out ...

While vibraphonist Matthias Lupri is a relative newcomer to his chosen instrument he has managed, in the space of only few short years, to emerge as an artist who is garnering increasing respect, not only as a player, but as a writer as well. With four albums under his belt, including the recently-released Transition Sonic, Lupri is amassing a remarkable amount of positive press for his work, which combines an interest in the jazz tradition with broader concerns. Truth be ...

Vibraphonist Matthias Lupri has always captured the essence of straight-ahead jazz at its best. He provides a groove over which his bands improvise in the classic tradition. Echoes of Gary Burton, Bobby Hutcherson, and Milt Jackson abound. From this modern jazz historical foundation, however, he's always felt free to explore.
With his latest release, Lupri retains the traditional bebop spirit that has given us immeasurable pleasure for more than half a century, but brings it all to us ...

Look at the credits to vibraphonist Mathias Lupri's latest disc and you'll notice that four of the six group members are credited with playing electronics along with their primary instruments. This should come as no surprise to fans of Lupri, who over the past six years and the course of three records, most notably his '02 release, Same Time Twice , has continued to hone a personal voice that is as much about ambience and atmosphere as it is about ...
