Liner Notes by Vanessa Perica: I wish I possessed just some of Holli’s poetic flair to accurately convey my thoughts on her glorious second album. Upon my first listen, it became apparent that she has a very clear sense of who she is as an artist, and isn’t swayed by what else is going on around her. It’s honest music making that nicely straddles the lines of beauty and darkness. Her lyrics are captivating, and melodies are gorgeous and memorable. It’s an incredibly smart move to forego the typical bass and drums on this occasion to allow long time duo collaborators - the exceptional Tal Cohen and Jamie Oehlers, as much room as possible to do their thing. Their solos and accompanying figures shine just the right amount, without ever overshadowing Holli’s stunning vocals. She fits in seamlessly here, as if they’ve been playing as a trio for years. What really elevates these performances are her well thought out arrangements. There’s always momentum, and an interesting journey in the way they unravel. I’ll be surprised if ‘Back the Way We Came’ doesn’t stay in your head for days. This tune has a lovely pop sensibility about it that oozes heart. And perhaps that’s what I love most about Holli’s music. Beyond all of her great technique, it’s her ability to connect with you emotionally that captures my attention. She wears her heart on her sleeve, and her vulnerability is most endearing. This album is deeply engaging from start to finish.
