Album Description
In 2022, at the Jazz en Ville festival in Vannes, young Breton trumpeter Awen Robbe met Louisiana's Kirk Joseph, one of the undisputed masters of the sousaphone. After three days of transmission and sharing, a strong bond was established between Awen and the music of New Orleans. Lulled by the sounds of jazz throughout his childhood, thanks in particular to his father - pianist and composer Fabien Robbe - the groove of Kirk Joseph was bound to enthrall Awen. A few months later, the idea for the album took shape in Awen's mind: to pay homage to the tradition of this jazz music of this jazz music, incorporating more varied musical elements and motifs picked up here and there, thus and more varied musical elements and motifs, playing across generations, to compose tracks that are very much his own. Universal Groove is a tribute to the tradition of jazz music, but also a propulsion towards its future. It's also a celebration of the universality of jazz, embodied in its traditional orality, the diversification we give it, its unifying power, and, of course, its invitation to dance. As the recording progressed, other musicians joined the project: Glen David Andrews, an incredible trombonist, also living in New Orleans; Richard Mercier, a French saxophonist who moves between world music; and Chance Leigh, a Californian guitarist with a highly experimental approach. Thanks to all these collaborations, Universal Groove suggests that these melodies - a fusion of jazz, groove, swing, electronica, ambient and free music - transcend borders, inviting everyone, whatever their origin, age or culture, to find their place in this musical eclecticism.
