Album Description

It has been a great experience to record some of my tunes with these fantastic musicians accompanying me, including Milan Verbist, Wolf de Backer and Simon Van Brandt. I had a chance to record in a cozy studio owned by a pianist and sound engineer Jan Willems, who did a great job in making the end result ready. I have been living and studying in The Netherlands and in Belgium, and gained some great experience in meeting new people during my journey, in concerts, jam sessions and during lessons. I’ve had a chance to study with greats like Wim Bronnenberg, Martijn van Iterson and Hendrik Braeckman, who have all given their great insight into the realm of jazz guitar. These tunes have come as a source of inspiration from many images that I have seen inside my head. Like mental associations. That’s what my compositions are all about. My music still relies to the jazz tradition although it has modern vibes, many of my musical heroes jazzwise including John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Horace Silver can still be heard in some way through my compositions, at least I hope so. This album is called Shades of Blue. The first tune ”Getting Into It” really has a nice bluesy vibe with some harmonic twists along the way. It really represents the band getting into the feeling of jazz as the first number in this album. The second tune is called ”Rainy Days”. It has a gloomy vibe in it, but it still has a major landing point. It pictures the weather of The Netherlands as it rains there often. The third one we have ”Bright Spots In The Dark”. It is a noctural tune that is meant to describe the city lights during the night time. At the same time, it is a hommage to pianist Bill Evans. Fourth one, ”Twilight Dance” is a fast tune with some energy in it. It describes the movement to something, and is dancable. ”White Summer Nights” has more calm vibe in it. It is a traditional swing tune in medium tempo, but has some rhythmical twists at some points. The tune describes very much the view above the clouds during a summer night. ”Quiet Street” is a quiet tune, with a calm tempo. It describes a noctural view in the streets after a long session in a jazz club during the small hours. ”Night at the Murphy’s” describes a vibe in a jazz club called Murphy’s Law in The Hague, but it could be any club during a good and burning jazz session. The last number is ”Goodbye For Now”. It has a wistful vibe in it, since it’s a solo piece.
