“This is why painters and composers who do such things are said to be Impressionists.” —John Voigt
In Monet's Haystacks, Josh Rosen on piano and John Voigt on string bass reinterpret four of
Monet's
celebrated paintings through improvised compositions. Inspired by Monet's technique of capturing the effects
of changing sunlight, Rosen and Voigt translate these visual impressions into musical soundscapes that evoke
the shifting colors and moods depicted in the paintings.
John Voigt describes their creative process: "Josh and I attempt to reproduce in musical sounds the effects of
the changing sunlight that Monet used to create his paintings. In that way, the four paintings we used became
our musical scores."
Each track on the EP reflects a different painting, capturing its essence through piano and bass improvisations.
From the shimmering harmonies of "Grainstack in Sunshine" to the dynamic textures of "Haystack, Morning
Snow Effect," Rosen and Voigt's music mirrors Monet's exploration of light and color.
Monet's Haystacks is not only a homage to Monet's artistic vision but also a testament to Rosen
and Voigt's
skill as composer-improvisers who translate visual art into auditory experiences.
