Album Description

Material Tropes is the debut album of The Nonidentical, a coming together of some of the leading lights of the London alternative Jazz scene and a reconstruction of musical counterpoint in the milieu of groove music. The sound of Material Tropes is rich, evocative and driving. There are Classical sonorities to be heard (Untouchables) alongside Afrobeat-infused grooves (White Collared Criminals), Folkish fantasias (Bijoulacra), Free Jazz eruptions (Many (One)) and processional pieces with a mystical undertone (One (Many), Fire In The Sky). Goller’s plaintive singing (Ocean’s End) and Giulia Loi’s hypnotic spoken word (The Spectacle) are juxtaposed with field recordings of protesters and wild animals (NOW, Flight). Lush organs and synths blend with beds of drums and percussion to create larger than life textures through which a host of contrapuntal melodic lines, both composed and improvised, run riot.
