L'hanno chiamato il nuovo profeta dell'afrobeat, trovando nelle sue origini nipponiche motivo di stupore per un linguaggio e un feel completamente assorbiti e rielaborati in uno stile personale ma ben riconducibile a un filone ormai dalla lunga storia. Il trombettista Takuya Kuroda con Zigzagger, pubblicato dalla Concord Records, arriva al suo quinto disco confermando e ingigantendo il proprio nome fra i grandi del jazz mondiale e firmando dodici composizioni che si dipanano fra il funk e il jazz.

Musica ricchissima di groove e che strizza l'occhio ad alcuni capitoli nello stile più zigagante (appunto) di Miles Davis in alcuni casi, di Hugh Masekela in altre, ma che ricorre molto spesso anche alla muscolarità di un Maceo Parker a pieno regime in altri episodi ancora. È proprio fra questi ambienti che tutto l'album di muove, appoggiato alle sicurezze di una formidabile sezione rimica formata da Rashaan Carter al basso, Adam Jackson alla batteria (a cui va aggiunto Keita Ogawa alle percussioni di "Actors," "Do They Know" e "Good Day Bad Habit").

Un tocco di suono Seventies arriva dal Rhodes di Takeshi Ohbayashi, che qua e là si prende grandi spazi per ricamare su trame pulsanti di batteria e basso (su tutte l'assolo di "Little Words"). Zigzagger è un album che piacerà a chi adora i giri metronomici di un motore funk che spinge una brillante carrozzeria fatta di lucidissimo jazz.
