Brussels Jazz Orchestra: Wild Beauty

Benchè candidato alla vincita di un Grammy Award, Wild Beauty, non è certo uno dei migliori CD della Brussels Jazz Orchestra. A conti fatti, i due prestigiosi ospiti non costituiscono il valore aggiunto di un progetto che naviga senza grandi colpi d'ala in un quieto mainstream. Joe Lovano è un magnifico solista, ma le sue composizioni non sembrano esaltare le qualità della migliore big-band jazz europea di oggi. L'arrangiatore Gil Goldstein è abile nell'organizzare il discorso musicale, finendo però con il privilegiare la magniloquenza del sassofonista statunitense rispetto alla dialettica con le varie sezioni orchestrali.

Ne discende un percorso per sax dove l'orchestra ha prevalentemente il ruolo di mera cornice, con il freno a mano tirato. I suoi componenti ben si destreggiano nel cogliere il mood dei vari brani, con cui il feeling è risultato però abbastanza deficitario. In virtù di un gioco ritmico brillante e di un accompagnamento puntuale ma mai debordante, i musicisti non sfigurano ma avrebbero meritato soluzioni più accattivanti.

Ispirati ad un vasto ambito di stili, gli arrangiamenti mirano a produrre un robusto swing dove parti scritte e solistiche sono ben equilibrate. Ma regna sulla musica un ordine piuttosto rigido, che lascia libertà solo di reiterazione delle parti ordinate.
