Jerry Granelli: What I Hear Now
What I Hear Now è un gioiellino di eleganza, sobrietà, passione, musicalità. Al settantaquatrenne Jerry Granelli sono sufficienti trentotto minuti scarsi per mettere in campo una vita dedicata alla musica -quella senza confini e senza barriere, dalle session free della San Francisco anni sessanta alle sedute psichedeliche con Sly Stone passando per gli storici trio con Denny Zeitlin prima, con Vince Guaraldi poi -e farla respirare a pieni polmoni nei sette brani del disco.

Il sestetto allestito per l'occasione prevede ben quattro fiati ma dimenticatevi poderosi riff, assoli infuocati, arrangiamenti orchestrali, logorroici fraseggi. Granelli utilizza sassofoni e trombone come pedine di una scacchiera, attraverso mosse che alternano ferrea logica e ardite soluzioni, incroci che esaltano purezza di linee e di suono, senza dimenticare una pulsazione sempre presente anche se talvolta più sotterranea che palese.

L'iniziale "Prologue" -impianto cameristico, contrabbasso archettato, lirismo asciutto -e il conclusivo "The Swamp" -ritmo irregolare, cadenza funky, il piedino che batte inevitabilmente -sono i due estremi all'interno dei quali si sviluppa il resto dell'album. Che è tutto da godere con una particolare segnalazione per "Run Daddy Run," libere divagazioni per sassofoni e batteria, e per "Mistery" intensa ballad che colpisce al cuore e mette a dura prova le corde della commozione.
