John Burnett Swing Orchestra: West of the State Street, East of Harlem
Gioiosa ed ammiccante, la musica di questo CD scorre fluida e piacevole senza però lasciare tracce originali. La informa un disteso e compiaciuto mainstream, avente per modello le grandi orchestre swing bianche e nere degli anni '40.

Con perizia tecnica e fedeltà assoluta al modello, l'ensemble guidato da John Burnette si muove calligraficamente nella vasta letteratura per big band del jazz, rivisitando i capolavori di Basie, Gillespie, Goodman, Roy Eldridge.

L'atmosfera calda e rilassata dell'esibizione live serve a mantenere su buoni livelli l'esuberanza ed il respiro ritmico delle trame proposte, in cui emerge il trombettista Randy Sanke. Una musica derivativa, ma suonata con trasporto ed intelligenza, ancorché curata nei minimi dettagli.

Gli assoli sono ben calibrati all'interno di un percorso molto convenzionale, in cui il vero punto di forza risiede nella forza di un collettivo che suona da anni stabilmente. Cinque sax, quattro trombe e tromboni sono la punta di una mega big-band d'alta professionalità, arricchita dalla voce di Frieda Lee.
