Awakening Orchestra: Vol. 1: This Is Not the Answer
Questo debutto di Kyle Saulnier è uno dei lavori orchestrali più ricchi e appassionanti degli ultimi anni, paragonabile per fantasia e freschezza a Infernal Machine, il disco d'esordio di Darcy James Argue.
Compositore e polistrumentista, Saulnier è nato nel Connecticut, ha studiato composizione alla Berklee e alla Manhattan School of Music e risiede da anni nel Bronx, New York. Per quasi sette anni ha scritto e provato partiture con questa formazione -dando sporadici concerti in locali decentrati-e dopo molti sforzi è riuscito a pubblicare i suoi lavori, ricevendo sostegno da una sottoscrizione su Kickstarter.

Il risultato svela una sorprendente e variopinta capacità di scrittura, in una concezione che privilegia netti contrasti orchestrali, inconsuete combinazioni timbriche e forti tensioni ritmiche in percorsi continuamente cangianti. Tra i lontani riferimenti potremmo citare la Jazz Composer's Orchestra, Don Ellis, la Vienna Art Orchestra e persino Bob Graettinger ma nessuno di loro è un modello preso a prestito: Kyle Saulnier sa creare fondali sontuosi e soluzioni ritmiche che rimandano a Gil Evans ma anche stavolta la sintesi è personale. Molti brani sono di medie-lunghe dimensioni e l'opera che intitola il disco è un'immaginifica suite in quattro movimenti che si snoda per 35 minuti. Le scelte sui temi sono inconsuete: il secondo CD si apre con l'"Intermezzo Op. 118: No. 2" di Johannes Brahms e si chiude con un arrangiamento del vecchio "Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo."

Con l'irriverenza onnivora tipica della sua generazione, Saulnier disegna percorsi a tinte marcate, inglobando e contrapponendo influenze e citazioni molto diverse: collettivi free, abbandoni cameristici, raffinati impasti orchestrali, ensemble urlati, citazioni rock, veementi assoli su ipnotici vamp. Il tutto sapendo giocare con le dinamiche orchestrali e gli interventi dei singoli, fino a sviluppare momenti di grande tensione in un percorso avvincente e di ampio respiro.

Il primo CD è anche il più ricco di contrasti e sorprese. Inizia con "Prelude & Fanfare: The Prophet" un brano fulminante per sia per l'aspetto ritmico che per quello coloristico che guarda sia al free che al rock con gli occhi del Gil Evans anni settanta.
Altri momenti sorprendenti sono le riletture di due classici del rock: "You Still Believe in Me," composto da Brian Wilson dei The Beach Boys per Pet Sounds e "Myxomatosis" dei Radiohead. Entrambi cantati benissimo (il primo da Seth Fruiterman, il secondo da Nathan Hetherington) accostano climi bucolici d'impronta folk a stordenti collettivi con l'innesto d'intensi assoli (Samuel Ryder, David Dejesus).

Nel secondo CD, la lunga suite "This Is Not The Answer" è un'opera ambiziosa e coerente, che coniuga i riferimenti classici con il linguaggio jazzistico. Anche stavolta potremmo collegarci a Gil Evans (ad esempio nella statica e cameristica overture) ma nessuno inventa partendo da zero e Saulnier sa sviluppare i quadri con autonomia. Nei successivi le orchestrazioni si snodano in modo aperto, accogliendo assoli appassionanti (David Dejesus, Nadje Noordhuis), intermezzi free, episodi dalle tinte radiose.

Kyle Saulnier spazia con sorprendente lucidità entro ampi orizzonti musicali, restando fedele all'estetica orchestrale del jazz e riuscendo a affrire una sintesi personale.

Il suo è uno degli esordi più interessanti dell'anno e il suo disco uno dei migliori.
