Andrew Hill e l'Eric Dolphy di Out Lunch sono i poli d'attrazione di questo quintetto chicagoano, che cavalca l'onda della sperimentazione degli anni '60. Alla base c'è il tentativo di evitare i clichè del mainstream, finendo però con il riproporre quelli dell'estetica presa a modello.

Varmint rappresenta un disco emblematico per riassumere pregi e difetti del jazz contemporaneo: impeccabile e solido, camaleontico e policentrico. Grande professionalità ed abilità tecnica, capace di generare curiosità e tensione emotiva nell'ascoltatore. In bilico tra tradizione e modernità, il percorso proposto è quanto mai stratificato, rivolto a mettere in evidenza non le idee ma timbriche e colori. Un disco superbamente suonato, ma che non di segue strade nuove ed inaspettate che possano proiettare la tradizione verso forme e significati diversi.

Belle, in compenso, le composizioni originali del leader, con un andamento scuro, ipnotico e nervosamente pulsante. Una musica d'effetto, ricca di sequenze corali, dove si impone il suono caldo e robusto di Adasiewicz, con un fraseggio secco e rutilante ora frastagliato e nervoso ("Green Grass") ora lirico e meditabondo ("I Hope She Is Awake").All'opera troviamo una formazione scintillante e ben assortita ma che potrebbe dare molto di più rispetto al sincretismo strumental-culturale da essa perseguito.
