Un disco che è una boccata di aria fresca. Allegro, vario, con buone intenzioni. Per il suo primo lavoro discografico da leader, il contrabbassista Massimiliano Rolff ha dimostrato di saper gestire bene il materiale musicale che ha a disposizione.

Il quintetto tutto italiano che ha dato vita a Unit Five si lascia trasportare dallo swing del giovane artista genovese. Con lo scorrere delle tracce si passa dalla spensieratezza rilassata di “Thanks God, it’s a Sunny Day” al buon impasto sonoro dei fiati in “Stones and Memories”, carezzevoli e ben supportati dalla sezione ritmica. Si attraversano le atmosfere noir dal passo cadenzato di “The Downtown Walk”, un apprezzabile esercizio di stile. In brani come “Unfaithful”, "All Natural" e “Wind Blow” Rolff mette subito in mostra le sue qualità e la vena hard bop, anche se l’impianto generale del disco è più riconducibile al bebop.

Massimiliano Rolff, che ha scritto tutti i brani del CD e firmato per intero gli arrangiamenti, si dimostra prima di tutto un promettente musicista e un leader attento. Mai troppo presente, affida ai suoi compagni tutto lo spazio per esprimersi.

Dopo le esperienze nell’elettro jazz del progetto Oleo e le tournée tra l’Europa e gli Stati Uniti accanto alla rocker Ginger Leigh, questo primo disco a nome del giovane contrabbassista genovese potrebbe essere la prima tappa importante per un percorso già ampiamente iniziato.
