Anche questo Twelve si inserisce perfettamente nell’estetica che ha portato l’etichetta catalana ad essere un importante punto di riferimento per lo stato di salute del jazz attuale e dei suoi giovani, a volte sconosciuti, interpreti. Ossia i piedi ben piantato nella miglior tradizione mainstream e le orecchie ben aperte sui fermenti più attuali.

Il chitarrista norvegese, ma da anni residente a New York, Jostein Gulbrandsen licenzia un album d’esordio impeccabile dal punto di vista del suono e della qualità esecutiva. Le sette composizioni originali sono ben articolate e rispecchiano da una parte la nuova identità nordamericana dall’altra fanno affiorare il gusto per i tempi dilatati e per una quieta indolenza nordica.

Supportato da due veterani della scuderia di Pujol, come il batterista Jeff Davis e il contrabbassista Eivind Opsvik, Gulbrandsen palesa uno stile chitarristico non particolarmente innovativo e originale, così che le sue doti migliori risultano essere la felice vena compositiva ed uno stile sobrio e lineare negli arrangiamenti. Piuttosto interessante ci sembra il sassofonista Jon Irabagon - esperienze con Billy Joel, Michael Bublè e John Abercrombie tra gli altri - dalla sonorità rugosa e speziata e dal fraseggio leggermente irregolare e spigoloso.

Album complessivamente gradevole ma che stenta a decollare per la mancanza di imprevedibilità e di gusto per il rischio.
