Robben Ford: Truth
La corsa di Robben Ford continua apparentemente sotto il segno della verità (‘Truth’), una parola che nel mondo del blues acquista significati ancora più profondi, andando a toccare le corde più nascoste dell’anima. In realtà la confezione un po’ patinata dei brani dei suoi ultimi album, lascia pensare che il fine ultimo del chitarrista e dei suoi consiglieri discografici sia quello di ottenere un posto nel mondo delle radio americane, più che in quello delle ‘hall of fame’ della musica del diavolo, come il blues veniva definito molti anni fa.

I brani sono intensi, spesso più orientati verso il soul-rock che non verso la forma classica delle dodici battute e persino il tributo a B.B. King (“Riley B. King”) è una escursione dolciastra in territorio rhythm and blues venato di soul, invece che un torrenziale tributo all’uomo che più ha messo in evidenza le potenzialità della chitarra elettrica come strumento solista nel blues. Una estensione della voce che ha posto le basi per la fortuna dei chitarristi e della chitarra solista negli ultimi cinquant’anni.

L’ottimo livello dei collaboratori messi a disposizione del chitarrista tiene alta la qualità del contesto musicale, anche se la chitarra di Ford sembra un po’ sacrificata a favore della sua voce. Una scelta poco comprensibile, visto il valore delle sue performance sulle sei corde e la non eccelsa qualità delle sue doti canore, certamente adeguate al contesto, ma mai al di sopra della media.

Non è un caso che la performance vocale di Susan Tedeschi nel brano di Paul Simon “One Man’s Ceiling Is Another Man’s Floor” sia nettamente quella che più si segnala per incisività ed espressività. L’album corre via piacevolmente ma senza lasciare graffiti troppo profondi sulle pareti dell’anima e spesso, quando le cose iniziano a farsi promettenti, durante le escursioni solistiche di Ford, sembra arrivare un segnale misterioso che dichiara chiuse le danze e lascia i fans con l’acquolina in bocca. Peccato.
