Ferenc Nemeth: Triumph
Anche se è attivo da oltre un decennio ai massimi livelli, il leader di questo splendido quartetto - il batterista ungherese Ferenc Nemeth - è ancora poco noto in Italia e necessita di una breve presentazione.

Nato in Ungheria, dopo aver frequentato il conservatorio di Györ e la Franz Listz Academy of Music, s'è trasferito negli Stati Uniti con una borsa di studio per frequentare i corsi alla Berklee ed è poi passato al New England Conservatory e al Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.

Dal 2003, anno in cui s'è trasferito a New York, Nemeth ha incrementato la sua attività professionale collaborando con un gran numero di formazioni e consolidando la partnership col chitarrista Lionel Loueke e il bassista Massimo Biolcati nel trio GilFeMa. Tra le sue produzioni più recenti ricordiamo Night Songs (debutto da leader con una formazione comprendente Mark Turner, Chris Cheek, John Patitucci, Loueke e altri), la partecipazione a Blood and Thunder di Aaron Irwin, a Free Forever di Omer Avital e al disco Mwaliko di Lionel Loueke.

Questo suo secondo album è una gemma di grazia e ricercatezza. Non è solo merito di partner straordinari come Joshua Redman, Kenny Werner e Lionel Loueke ma della empatica tensione stabilitasi tra loro, che disegna un avvincente e coerente affresco musicale. Anche se il sax tenore e soprano di Redman ha maggiore evidenza, la musica si snoda in un dialogo continuamente interattivo, con assoli sempre misurati che non alterano i delicati profili melodici.

Il percorso musicale risulta quindi arioso e si snoda come una suite, con un'introduzione e brevi interludi che fungono da presentazione e raccordo per temi generalmente più ampi e articolati.

"Interlude I" è caratterizzato dalla chitarra, insolitamente cameristica, di Loueke; "Interlude II" è un serrato confronto improvvisato tra Nemeth e Redman; "Interlude III" è interamente sviluppato dalla batteria; "Interlude IV" è un ricercato intervento pianistico di Kenny Werner.

Le altre composizioni, generalmente più lunghe, sono caratterizzate da svolgimenti analogamente sorprendenti, pur condividendo la stessa estetica: ad esempio il tessuto ritmico frastagliato e ricco di scomposizioni di "Triumph" si confronta con l'esposizione distesa e di largo respiro di "Sorrow and Wishful Thinking," impreziosito da un intenso intervento di Redman al soprano. Oppure col magistrale svolgimento di "Longing," tema dai tratti nostalgici rammenta le composizioni di Paul Motian.
