Un uomo e la sua chitarra. In completa solitudine, dividendosi tra la cinquecentesca Civitella Ranieri, nel cuore antico dell'Umbria, e la cucina del sassofonista Matthieu Metzger, Marc Ducret approda al quarto capitolo del progetto Tower. A documentarlo, come i precedenti, la rediviva Ayler Records, etichetta con doppio passaporto: svedese di nascita, francese d'adozione.

Quarto capitolo che, bizzarria discografica, arriva dopo il secondo, dedicato al super quartetto con Tim Berne, Tom Rainey e Dominique Pifarély, e prima del terzo, che uscirà a breve e terrà a battesimo il nuovo sestetto - giovane e transalpino - del chitarrista (con pianoforte, percussioni e tre tromboni).

In completa solitudine, dunque. E al naturale. Un paio di strumenti acustici, una manciata di composizioni originali, alcune delle quali già fissate su nastro per i primi due Tower, e una cover: "Electricity," firmata Joni Mitchell e riletta in poco più di un minuto con incantevole grazia; un fuoriprogramma, uno zuccherino piazzato in fondo a una mezz'ora abbondante di astratte meditazioni. Come l'iniziale "From a Distant Land," che passando dal Fred Frith di To Sail, To Sail porta direttamente a John Cage; oppure la rarefatta "Sybil Vane," romantica e pura alla maniera dell'ultimo Derek Bailey. Più caldo e narrativo il tono delle due "Real Thing," nella cui cervellotica trama sono intessuti scampoli di blues e brandelli di funky; mentre "Sur l'Electricité" ha un sapore metallico, di ruggine e catene.

Spuntano l'Africa e il Giappone, infine, nella sognante "... A Distant Land," che fa pensare alle corde esotiche della kora o del koto. Uno sguardo a terre lontane e musiche ancestrali; un disco fuori dal tempo, dal respiro attuale, moderno, eppure così antico, primordiale.
