Lubos Soukup: Through the Mirror

Il secondo album da leader del sassofonista ceco Lubos Soukup è un lavoro dagli intenti ambiziosi, e per vari aspetti riuscito, che porta il suo quartetto al confronto con differenti ambiti espressivi: da un lato dinamiche orchestrazioni jazz di taglio mainstream e dall'alto sperimentazioni cameristiche di stampo contemporaneo.

Dopo aver studiato al conservatorio di Praga e alla polacca Academia Muzyczna Szymanowskiego di Katowice, Soukup ha perfezionato i suoi studi al conservatorio di Copenhagen dove ormai risiede. È membro dalla band scandinava Madhas, del quintetto ceco-polacco Inner Spaces e di altri gruppi. Un respiro internazionale che ritroviamo in questo disco, che riunisce 14 musicisti di cinque diverse nazioni per un progetto da lungo tempo accarezzato.

Autore di tutti i brani e sassofonista d'impronta shorteriana, Soukup evidenzia ottime doti soliste e di scrittura, riuscendo in qualche brano (ma soprattutto in "Prisoner") a coniugare originalmente le parti degli archi in un'orchestrazione jazz di taglio contemporaneo.
Gli altri brani presentano situazioni musicali diverse. Abbiamo il soprano del leader e il pianoforte di Christian Pabst in primo piano col solo quartetto ("Slav in Scandinavia"), brani orchestrali mainstream con Soukup al tenore ("Shaman"), altri con limitati (ma efficaci) innesti degli archi nella stessa estetica ("Street," "On the Wings of a Story"), temi cameristici per il solo Epoque Quartet ("The Unbearable Lightness of Being") e altri in cui la dimensione classico contemporanea degli archi fa da introduzione a quella jazzistica portando a due quadri radicalmente diversi.
