AMP Trio: Three
Terzo album per questo trio codiretto dal giovane pianista Addison Frei, dal contrabbssista Perrine Grace e dal batterista Matt Young, che si suddividono anche la paternità dei brani -solo la chapliniana "Smile" non è originale. La cifra è quella di un jazz moderno dinamico e tutto sommato leggero, piuttosto convenzionale nelle atmosfere e nelle forme espressive, arricchito però da bei fraseggi -tanto del piano, quanto del contrabbasso -e da originali interventi della batteria.

È infatti quest'ultima che segna i brani più interessanti: "N.T. Bag," dove il beat più tagliente e aggressivo affianca reiterazioni ossessive del pianoforte e assoli del contrabbasso, e "Onwards," dedicato al sassofonista Bob Belden (scomparso nel 2015 non ancora sessantenne), dinamicamente intensa e incentrata su un movimento ascendente.

Più tradizionale e lieve, ma comunque accattivante, la cover di "Smile," fortemente swingante e con protagonista il pianoforte di Frei, mentre la conclusiva "Walking Life" -che vede Frei al Fender Rhodes -è una narrazione sospesa e un po' liquida, dai toni vagamente melanconici.

Complessivamente un lavoro ben confezionato e gradevole, che non lascia però segni persistenti nell'ascoltatore.
