The Marvin Sewell Group: The Worker's Dance
È giovane, ha talento, ha suonato con gente come David Sanborn, Marcus Miller, Jorge Sylvester, Greg Osby, Joe Lovano, George Benson, Jack Dejohnette, Sekou Sanidiata, Peter Herborn. Per sei anni ha condiviso i destini artistici con Cassandra Wilson, suonando un’infinità di cordofoni e dando il suo contributo in Traveling Miles, (Marvin ha scritto con Wilson la canzone, “Right Here, Right Now”) . Non avrebbe certo bisogno di altre credenziali il chitarrista, nato e cresciuto a Chicago.

Dice di amare il blues, le chitarre d’epoca, di cui possiede esemplari unici o rari. Ma alla fine dalla sua musica sgorga di tutto.

Basta vedere la line up della sua band che comprende un paio di fisarmoniche (una appartiene alla stramba quanto geniale Rachelle Garniez), wurlitzer, sezione ritmica e chitarre. Sembra blues, ma in realtà può essere molte cose come il tango, il folk e il rock.

In fondo, Sewell aromatizza la musica del diavolo per renderla attuale, per darle una sua personale interpretazione, senza fronzoli nostalgici (“Big Joe”). L’ammanta di ballad dai colori tenui e suggestivi (“A Walk in the Rain”); a tratti ricorda il fado stile Madredeus (“The Journey”); spesso scherza con disegni solistici in controluce che sanno molto di Paris, Texas (“Evening”); molte volte si affida alla sei corde come per arrampicarsi su montagne scoscese e campi di cotone che trasudano sofferenza e dolore (“The Worker’s Dance”).

Poi si ricorda del blues alla B.B. King (“Mexico”), prima di passare alla festosità e alle tessiture di ampio respiro ideate in “Love Poem”.

Un disco che si distingue dai soliti luoghi comuni blues imponendo un artista che si impone per personalità e bravura.
