Kevin Mahogany: The Vienna Affair
Il numero dei cantanti jazz di sesso maschile è sempre stato esiguo rispetto al preponderante universo femminile, oggi più che mai.
La recente scomparsa di Mark Murphy (il massimo vocalist moderno, già da qualche anno in semi-ritiro) ha accentuato la carenza anche se l'ingresso in scena di Gregory Porter ha portato una ventata d'aria fresca.

Di Kevin Mahogany s'erano perse le tracce da qualche tempo ma questo disco dimostra il suo ottimo stato di salute artistica. Coerente con la sua storia di versatile e duttile baritono legato alla tradizione afroamericana di Eddie Jefferson, Jon Hendricks e Joe Williams, il 58enne cantante di Kansas City ci regale un disco brioso e accattivante, che spazia con inventiva tra generi musicali e atmosfere.
Sostenuto dalla vibrante forza magnetica della sua voce, Mahogany resta uno specialista nel canto scat, nei temi ritmicamente esuberanti e nel blues dove emerge tutto il suo eclettismo timbrico. A questo riguardo ricordiamo il serrato "Sneak Thief," lo swingante "Steamin' Greens" di Dave Stryker e il brillante "It's Too Late."
L'altro versante della sua personalità vocale s'esprime con l'intimo e melodico appeal del crooner. Lo dimostrano la suadente interpretazione di "The Nearness of You," il luminoso valzer "Tilly's Waltz," "Pretty Blue" di Joe Williams e la delicata bossa nova di Kenny Barron "Joanne Julia," a cui Mahogany ha aggiunto un testo.

Altri brani in repertorio sono scritti interamente dal cantante e si caratterizzano anche per l'arguzia dei testi: in "My New Friend" prefigura un futuro sodalizio con Michael Buble e in "It's Too Late" intima a una ragazza di non cercarlo in nessuna forma, reale o virtuale, perche ha già avuto la sua occasione: ora è il turno di un'altra.
Il disco è stato inciso nel novembre 2014, in uno studio non lontano da Vienna, con un eccellente quartetto di strumentisti austriaci.
