Steve Colson: The Untarnished Dream
Anche negli anni settanta, quando l'AACM di Chicago otteneva ampi riconoscimenti in Italia e Francia, il pianista Steve Colson non ebbe modo di emergere come figura di primo piano. Dette anche concerti anche nel nostro Paese e qualcuno ricorderà il suo gruppo d'allora, The Colson Unity Troupe, con cui incise anche un album per l'etichetta Black Saint (No Reservation, 1980).

Molto attivo come sideman, Colson ha inciso relativamente poco a suo nome e questo è il quinto disco come leader o co-leader della sua carriera. Un disco con i prestigiosi Reggie Workman al contrabbasso e Andrew Cyrille alla batteria a cui s'aggiunge, in quattro dei nove brani, anche la consorte Iqua Colson.

Pur essendo una cantante di buon livello, che ricorda a tratti Sarah Vaughan e Betty Carter, è dal trio che vengono le cose migliori.

Colson è pianista con uno stile radicato nella tradizione post-boppistica ed in brani come "Circumstantial" o "Maybe," emergono diverse affinità con Sonny Clark o George Cables: maestria nel gestire volumi e colori senza eccedere, eleganza melodica e raffinato senso ritmico. Ma la sua propensione tende ad un linguaggio più astratto, con qualche influenza di Muhal Abrams, com'è evidente in "Parallel Universe" un pezzo liberamente improvvisato dove l'interplay con i due partner è ancor più intenso e ricco di spunti.

È l'unica prova del trio orientata in quest'ambito estetico e già nel successivo, "Warriors" troviamo molti elementi della tradizione rivisitati, come lo stride piano. In tutte le situazioni stilistiche, comunque, l'accompagnamento di Workman e Cyrille è impeccabile e costituisce un vero valore aggiunto alla qualità del lavoro.
