Una tuba, un sax tenore, un trombone. E tre musicisti irregolari, musicalmente anarchici, ostinatamente curiosi. Potremmo parafrasare "Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore" anche se i sei in questione, più che l'autore, sembrano cercare e trovare nuove vie di comunicazione, nuovi canoni linguistici, nuove prospettive per l'improvvisazione, e perché no, nuovi motivi di divertimento.

Tra musicisti e strumenti si allacciano strane relazioni, si mettono in campo connivenze insolite, si confondono i ruoli. Così in un album che avrebbe dovuto essere dominato dagli strumenti a fiato, da possenti emissioni, da sinfonie di colonne d'aria, da sorprendenti armonizzazioni, l'ascoltatore si trova di fronte ad una sorta di teatro dell'assurdo ricco di gesti (immaginati), di parole, di voci, di silenzi.

Se "Common Determinator" è ispirato a Carl Stalling, geniale compositore dei primi Looney Toons, l'inserimento di un dialogo nonsense tra i musicisti, con tanto di stop and go, lo trasforma in altro rispetto ad un semplice omaggio musicale. In "Common Indetermination" a regnare è addirittura il silenzio, sul quale si adagiano i suoni delle chiavi percosse, lo stridore dell'ottone e del metallo, il fremito quasi vitale del corpo degli strumenti. Mentre in "Another Determinator," sull'unico riff presente in tutta l'incisione, sembra di ascoltare un Peter Hammil (Van Der Graf Generator) tarantolato e ammaliato dall'opera di Bertold Brecht. E via di questo passo, una sorpresa via l'altra.

Terza testimonianza discografica del trio tedesco-olandese, The Universe Is a Disk è album senza compromessi, ostico, arduo, a tratti oscuro, ma che ascolto dopo ascolto assume sembianze mutevoli e rivela continue, nuove preziosità.
