Pat Metheny: The Unity Sessions
Il live in studio voluto da Pat Metheny per documentare il livello raggiunto dal gruppo nel corso del lungo tour mondiale che ha toccato 150 città vede ora la luce nella versione solo audio, dopo essere già stato pubblicato qualche mese fa come DVD/Blu Ray Disc. L'innesto del polistrumentista italiano Giulio Carmassi è bastato a trasformare il quartetto della Unity Band originaria nello Unity Group attuale, che raccoglie l'eredità del disciolto Pat Metheny Group diventandone la versione attualizzata e dal carattere più jazzistico per la presenza del sax di Chris Potter e la ritmica composta dal contrabbassista Ben Williams e dal batterista Antonio Sanchez.

Il contenuto di questo doppio CD è esattamente lo stesso presente nella versione video di cui abbiamo già diffusamente parlato qui, anche se i quindici brani sono presentati in un differente ordine. Il repertorio pesca abbondantemente nei due album precedentemente incisi dalla Unity Band, con l'aggiunta di alcuni titoli presi dalla discografia di Metheny. Significativa la presenza di "Two Folk Songs (#1)" da 80/81 l'unico precedente di Metheny alla guida di un gruppo comprendente un sassofonista, cui lo Unity Group si rifà in qualche modo. Da segnalare anche un versione del classico "Cherokee" in duo chitarra/sassofono, e un lungo medley di vecchie composizioni di Metheny interpretate alla chitarra acustica.

Il gruppo mostra grande compattezza nell'esecuzione dei brani, conseguenza del lungo rodaggio nei tanti concerti, e una notevole carica energetica, anche se la mancanza del pubblico toglie quella speciale interazione coi musicisti che apporta sempre qualcosa in più, ma Metheny ha preferito la realizzazione in studio per favorire e semplificare gli aspetti tecnici delle riprese video. La musica rimane comunque ampiamente soddisfacente, come ha potuto constatare chi ha già visionato il DVD. La scelta dell'uno o dell'altro mezzo per il pubblico rimane dunque una questione prettamente personale, dettata più che altro da considerazioni di ordine pratico, col CD più facilmente fruibile e il DVD che aggiunge la dimensione visuale all'esperienza dell'ascolto, ma entrambi rimangono decisamente raccomandabili.
