Kate McGarry: The Subject Tonight Is Love
Il titolo di questo disco è preso da una poesia del 1300, scritta dal mistico sufi Hafiz e presenta un fascinoso percorso, che indaga i differenti aspetti dell'amore in un repertorio di undici brani. Protagonisti sono la cantante Kate McGarry, il chitarrista Keith Ganz (suo partner in altri album e nella vita) e il pianista Gary Versace che ha collaborato con entrambi in varie occasioni. I tre artisti incidono assieme per la prima volta e ospitano in un paio di brani il batterista Obed Calvaire o il trombettista Ron Miles.

Anche se provengono da autori e contesti diversi i temi in oggetto sono interpretati con tale adesione lirica da produrre un concept album di singolare bellezza. Kate McGarry è una delle cantanti più raffinate e sensibili della scena contemporanea ed è sicuramente sottovalutata: in 25 anni di carriera ha inciso meno di dieci dischi a suo nome, molti dei quali per la Palmetto, e questo lavoro—che giunge a quattro anni di assenza dal precedente—è stato selezionato al Grammy Award 2019 come miglior disco di jazz vocale.

Dopo un breve prologo, il percorso inizia con ”Secret Love”, romantico tema che Sammy Fain e Paul Webster scrissero nel 1953 per il musical Calamity Jane: trasfigurato in una leggera bossa nova, il brano si snoda con la fragranza della brezza primaverile. Segue l'originale medley che accosta il bluesy ”Climb Down” e il marziale folk song irlandese ”Whiskey You're the Devil”, chiaro omaggio alla nazione dei suoi antenati.

Ognuno dei brani seguenti conferma l'empatico interplay del trio e il duttile appeal della cantante che offre emozioni sul fronte jazzistico (l'estetica è quella di Helen Merrill e Norma Winstone) che in ambiti trasversali, spaziando da Egberto Gismonti (”Playing Palhaco”) ai Beatles (”All You Need Is Love”).

I brani sono tutti molto belli. Le nostre preferenze vanno all'intimo e appassionato ”Losing Strategy #4” e all'estroversa interpretazione in scat di ”Mr. Sparkle / What a Difference Day Made”. Chiari esempi della versatile e matura cifra espressiva della cantante.
