Vi ricordate i Matt Bianco? Erano un gruppo britannico degli anni ottanta, esponenti di punta del cosiddetto "New Cool" assieme a Style Council e Working Week. Per il loro piacevole pop-jazz e le affinità con la cantante Basia Trzetrzelewska, mi sono tornati in mente ascoltando questo disco di Elisabeth Shepherd.

Il confronto può rendere l'idea ma le differenze non mancano. Nel disco della pianista e cantante canadese si insiste meno sulle atmosfere "pop" e il ritmo ha una chiara connotazione dance che si coniuga con piacevoli arrangiamenti soulful ed ottimi assoli. Il solista di punta, che fa la differenza quand'è presente, è il chitarrista Lionel Loueke che aggiunge fantasia e groove con i suoi interventi.

Nata e residente a Montreal, Elizabeth Shepherd è attiva professionalmente da un decennio e s'è fatta notare per alcuni pregevoli album, caratterizzati da accattivanti connubi tra passato e presente, tra jazz e musiche popolari. Ottima tastierista, ha composto e arrangiato tutti i brani e canta con elegante chiarore timbrico, buon gusto interpretativo e varietà di accenti. Le esecuzioni sono brillanti e il percorso musicale risulta quanto mai godibile, sia nei brani dinamici che in quelli più riflessivi. Sul versante pop spicca l'accattivante "B.T.Cotton" che inizia con un sample di Lead Belly ma poi segue una strada diversa, prendendo a modello il New Cool britannico di cui si diceva. Tra i temi più articolati ricordiamo "Lion's Den" e "Baby Steps" entrambi caratterizzato da una bella tensione ritmica e rielaborazioni rievocanti la fusion storica.
