Gilbert Holmstrom Quartet: The Mandelbrot Set

La dedica iniziale al New York Contemporary Five e quella finale a Don Cherry, delineano al meglio gli estremi stilistici all’interno dei quali si colloca The Mandelbrot Set. Il quartetto del sassofonista svedese Gilbert Holstrom si muove, cioè, tra robusti omaggi alla New Thing storica e le intuizioni world del grande trombettista.

In mezzo, tanta buona musica, vitale, pulsante, ricca di riferimenti alle stagioni più vivaci della musica afroamericana, con quattro musicisti pienamente padroni dei propri mezzi espressivi ed in grado di sublimare riferimenti stilistici assai diversi in un linguaggio personale e assai godibile.

Trovano spazio, così, composizioni dalle perfette forme geometriche rinnovabili all’infinito, come i frattali definiti dal matematico francese Benoit Mandelbrot - da cui il titolo del disco -, ed arcane atmosfere che sembrano provenire da mondi lontani nel tempo e nello spazio.

Ritmi danzanti e popolari suonati come una fanfara di New Orleans in preda a visioni allucinate convivono fianco a fianco a coltraniane, torrenziali escursioni spirituali. Spiritosi up tempo dal fascino beat si mischiano a canoniche cadenze bop o a sezioni polifoniche intrise di elementi blues e churchy alla Mingus.

Il tutto condito con gusto ed invidiabile senso del divertimento.
