Christopher Alpiar Quartet: The Jazz Expression

Il riferimento chiaro, netto, colmo di rispetto e di incondizionato amore (l'indizio contenuto nel titolo della quarta traccia è del tutto superfluo) è il quartetto periodo Impulse! di John Coltrane. In The Jazz Expression troviamo quindi musica di grande intensità, sorretta da un potente afflato spirituale, da un ribollire di emozioni che coprono l'intera gamma del corpo e della mente umana. Spesso ti travolgono impetuose e insaziabili, a volte creano oasi che portano alla riflessione, alla meditazione alla pace con sé e con il mondo intero.

Il sax tenore lacera lo spazio con urla che arrivano dritte al cuore, attraverso cavalcate imponenti ma affatto ridondanti, così come sussurra dolcezze infinite. Batteria e contrabbasso alimentano un moto perpetuo di grande spessore mentre il pianoforte rischiara gli "sheets of sound" di coltraniana memoria con interventi timbricamente cristallini e senza disdegnare insolite spigolosità nella costruzione delle frasi.

La registrazione risale al lontano febbraio 1995 e mostra un quartetto assai ispirato che, nel solco di sassofonisti che hanno contribuito ha rinnovare il linguaggio dello strumento e del jazz in generale degli anni sessanta, ha saputo aggiornare quell'idioma jazzistico conservandone lo spirito originario.
