Derek Menchan: The Griot Swings the Classics
Multi-instrumentalist Derek Menchan refers to them as "snapshots in black," and certainly the covers from the American Negro collection on The Griot Swings the Classics delivering a rich history lesson, especially in the context of the shocking racial division happening in the 21st century. But from just a pure musical standpoint, the album is strong and consistent from beginning to end regardless of context.

Menchan is an artist who knows a thing or two about great melodies. He set out to combine beautiful soul melodies with simmering R&B and even a touch of jazz. As a result, his sound is spiced up with all the right elements, and he knows how to make the most out of a great song. The Griot Swings the Classics is a testament to his skills and vision. On this fascinating, elegantly crafted release, Menchan decided to put his own spin on some beloved classic tunes, as the title of this album might suggest. A favorite song on this record is his amazing rendition of "Girl from Ipanema," along with his stunning take on yet another evergreen, "Fly Me To The Moon."

Menchan is an accomplished musician, and it is inspiring how he hears music. The creative way he reinterpreted such famous melodies is remarkable because he still managed to capture his passion and personality, bringing a breath of fresh air to these timeless songs, while staying true to their original spirit. These classic jewels, in the hands of Derek Menchan and company, simply shine.
