Hilary Gardner: The Great City
Nel traboccante panorama delle nuove jazz singers, Hilary Gardner ha saputo emergere già con questo debutto, che spicca per la sentita adesione al jazz anni quaranta/cinquanta senza timore d'apparire demodé. La Gardner è una suadente interprete di ballads che disegna con profonda musicalità, purezza espressiva ed elegante chiarore timbrico secondo i modelli di Julie London, Peggy Lee e June Christy.

È cresciuta a Wasilla -una cittadina dell'Alaska -e da qualche anno ha realizzato il sogno di lavorare a New York dove ha bruciato le tappe. Si esibisce regolarmente col suo gruppo al Birdland, al Café Carlyle, al Jazz at Kitano ed ha costituito un frizzante trio vocale con Amy Cervini e Melissa Stylianou ispirandosi alle Boswell Sisters.
Un produttore esperto come Eli Wolf le ha confezionato un repertorio quanto mai pertinente, che le si addice come un elegante abito da sera: a parte la doverosa "Autumn in New York" (la great city del titolo e l'oggetto d'amore del disco). La Gardner interpreta una manciata di song non molto frequentati presi anche dal repertorio di Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits e Joni Mitchell.
Il suo canto al contempo sofisticato e infantile, la stilizzata elaborazione melodica, la puntualità d'intonazione le carica di un intimo appeal riecheggiante la tradizione.

L'accompagna un settetto che si pone al suo servizio con swingante sensibilità e il percorso musicale scorre con la freschezza di una brezza di primavera: tra le interpretazioni più riuscite ricordiamo "Brooklyn Bridge" (con il sax tenore di Jason W. Marshall riecheggiante Ben Webster), la notturna "Drunk on the Moon" di Waits e la colloquiale "No One After You" di Cohen.
