La libera improvvisazione free vive e profilica nei paesi scandinavi e trova ospitalità nel catalogo della portoghese Clean Feed. Sotto il riferimento a Glenn Miller (accostamento più lontano e irriverente non si poteva trovare) il quintetto Heat Death presenta tre ore di musica legata alla free improvisation europea degli anni settanta. Per intenderci quella di Evan Parker, Peter Brötzmann o della Globe Unity di Alexander von Schlippenbach.

Il percorso dei tre CD si sviluppa in improvvisazioni caratterizzate da furibondi collettivi free e lunghi interventi individuali. La composizione centrale, divisa in quattro parti, è la multiforme ”Myriads of Space” che coniuga episodi d'astratto camerismo a sequenze magmatiche e vibranti, di fortissima tensione.

I componenti del quintetto non sono noti in Italia, se non a coloro che seguono gli sviluppi di un'estetica ormai storicizzata ma capace ancora di colpire e sorprendere. Sono tre norvegesi (Møster, Høyer e Knedal Andersen) e due svedesi (Küchen e Aleklint) di alto valore individuale e fantasiose doti d'interazione. La varietà dei percorsi è favorita dal polistrumentismo dei due sassofonisti che passano di frequente al clarinetto, al flauto e al sopranino, mentre immettono nel tessuto musicale frequenti sorprese. Tra queste ricordiamo il ritualistico pattern ritmico che sostiene il torrenziale assolo di Kjetil Møster alla fine di ”Myriads of Space 1” oppure i marcati contrasti che sottendono il lungo assolo del trombonista Mats Äleklint Quartet all'inizio di ”Unservable Jazz Soup”.

Un disco imperdibile per gli amanti dell'avanguardia storica europea.
