James Chance & Terminal City: The Fix Is In
È un James Chance che guarda all'R&B degli anni Quaranta e Cinquanta, quello che ascoltiamo alla guida dei Terminal City [ci troviamo anche tipi navigati come Dave Hofstra o Richard Dworkin] in questo The Fix Is In. Un James Chance che guarda a quegli Unsung Heroes of Rock 'n' Roll cui lo scrittore Nick Tosches ha dedicato alcune delle sue pagine più memorabili e che non può che farlo con quella naturale sgangheratezza che ha sempre contraddistinto le sue avventure.

Chance ha sempre avuto ben chiare le "relazioni pericolose" tra rock e jazz, tra le esuberanze del funk e le inquietudini dell'avanguardia e dimostra anche qui di sapere tirare delle linee angolose tra i vari linguaggi, anche se il suo crooning ebbro si muove sempre incerto sul crinale tra ironia straniante e uscite di strada.

Ne viene fuori un disco che disorienta, che in parte affascina, ma che non sempre riesce nelle maliziose seduzioni che sono tipiche di Chance: le cose migliori sono quelle più groovy come la title-track o la conclusiva "Leave My Girl Alone," in cui l'irriverente energia del musicista si percepisce al meglio.

I nostalgici dei Contorsions si possono rifare gli occhi con il DVD accluso al disco, un documentario che segue la band nella trasferta inglese del 2005 per suonare all'All Tomorrow's Parties: vederlo suonare e ballare sul palco è sempre imperdibile!
