Ralph Peterson: The Duality Perspective

The Duality Perspective è un album di sicuro interesse, concettualmente e formalmente diviso in due parti (come fa presagire il titolo), nel quale interagiscono diversi elementi stilistici, messi insieme da Ralph Peterson con sagacia e buon gusto compositivo.

Il batterista organizza la prima sezione del lavoro insieme a un quartetto dove spicca la figura espressiva di Felix Peikli, capace con il clarinetto di disegnare le melodie originali che caratterizzano i primi cinque brani in programma. Al suo fianco si muove il vibrafonista Joseph Doubleday, che agisce sullo sfondo per creare atmosfere notturne e dal sapore vagamente vintage. Il sound che viene emanato ha andamenti irregolari, con echi caraibici che ben si innestano in una trama dalla maglie larghe, dove si inseriscono la marimba di Bryan Carrott in "4 in 1" e le percussioni di Reinaldo Dejesus. C'è anche il modo di trovare un momento di rilassatezza, in un contesto ritmicamente sostenuto, in "Addison and Anthony," ballad che emana morbidi scenari da love story.

Si respira un'aria più hardboppistica nella seconda parte del CD, nella quale Peterson suona con un sestetto molto ben coeso, nel quale gli interpreti tracciano un copione fatto di temi e assoli dal buon appeal. La forza espressiva di questo assetto è tradotta dai fiati: quello potente e calibrato di Walter Smith III al tenore e quelli più snelli e ficcanti del trombettista Sean Jones e di Tia Fuller, che alterna sax alto e soprano. Anche in questa seconda parte The Duality Perspective si lascia ampiamente apprezzare, per un ascolto che conosce una discreta via di mezzo tra tensioni e relax.
