Coleman Hawkins: The Centennial Collection

Though it won't get the attention of the recent Duke Ellington or Louis Armstrong centennials, the 100th anniversary of Coleman Hawkins' birth, coming up on November 21, certainly warrants celebration from jazz fans. Dubbed the "father of the tenor saxophone," Hawkins was a vital force on the jazz scene for five decades, moving through the swing era to bebop and beyond.

Bluebird's "Centennial Collection" begins and ends, appropriately enough, with two renditions of the tune Hawkins is most associated with, the lush ballad "Body and Soul," (the classic 1939 version and a 1956 recording with a 24-piece orchestra). In between, the CD packs in 18 more tracks recorded between 1929 and 1963, featuring ample illustrations of Hawkins' powerful, yet always relaxed sound and that rich, luxuriant tone. What's most remarkable about the collection is the sheer variety of settings Hawkins performs—and excels—in, from early swing sides with McKinney's Cotton Pickers and big band efforts with Fletcher Henderson and Lionel Hampton, to bebop outings with Fats Navarro and J.J. Johnson, and even a memorable 1963 pairing with his supreme disciple, Sonny Rollins.

While it's outstanding as an overview of Hawkins' career—and as a brief tour of most of the major jazz movements of the first two-thirds of the last century—what really puts this set over the top is an accompanying DVD that features rare video of Hawkins jamming with fellow tenor titan Lester Young and others. Essential.
