Billy Hart & The WDR Big Band: The Broader Picture
A dispetto della notorietà e del prestigio ottenuti nell'attività di batterista e insegnante, le doti compositive di Billy Hart sono relativamente poco note. Il trombonista e compositore svizzero Christophe Schweizer, già suo allievo al Mannes College of Music di New York nel 1992, rende omaggio al maestro arrangiando alcuni suoi brani ed eseguendoli con la WDR Big Band.

La scelta è caduta su otto temi scritti da Hart per gli album Enchance, Rah e Oceans of Time, in un periodo che va dal 1977 al 1996. Alcuni brani sono stati ripresi dallo stesso batterista nel recente All Our Reason (ECM 2012) ma è la prima volta che si presentano in una veste orchestrale, dall'aspetto particolarmente ricercato e ricco di accadimenti. Ad aggiungere interesse per l'incisione c'è la presenza dello stesso Hart alla batteria, con le sue marcate punteggiature ricche di pathos.

Il sound orchestrale è magniloquente e sostiene con teatrale calibrazione i lunghi interventi dei solisti. La composizione di maggior spessore è "The Generations Suite," divisa in tre parti ("Layla-Joy," "Song For Balkis," "Reneda") ognuna caratterizzata da elementi diversi: la prima dall'universo musicale latino, la seconda da motivi cameristici mentre la terza è più spigliatamente jazzistica. Le altre composizioni sono tutte molto belle e orchestrate con alta professionalità. L'iniziale "Teule's Redemption" è tra le migliori: si sviluppa per oltre 15 minuti in un susseguirsi di momenti armonicamente sontuosi e ritmicamente avvincenti, con chiare sequenze coltraniane espresse del sax tenore Paul Heller.

Cosa dire di più? È tutto come un bel prato svizzero: perfetto ordine senza un filo d'erba fuori posto ma alla fine qualche sorpresa non guasterebbe.
