Mauger: The Beautiful Enabler
Che stimolante idea fare triangolare il sax contralto di Rudresh Mahanthappa, il contrabbasso di Mark Dresser e la batteria di Gerry Hemingway!

Confronto tra generazioni, innanzitutto: Mahanthappa si è fatto conoscere negli ultimi anni, in particolare per le frequenti collaborazioni con il pianista Vijay Iyer, con cui condivide l'origine indiana [Mahanthappa è cresciuto comunque nel Colorado ed è curiosamente nato a Trieste!], mentre Dresser e Hemingway hanno sin dagli anni Settanta incrociato i loro destini, in particolare nel quartetto di Anthony Braxton.

Confronto tra inguaggi improvvisativi, ovviamente: il linguaggio complesso e articolato del sassofonista e la libertà di due esploratori per cui non ci sono barriere come i suoi compagni di viaggio. Costruzione quindi, ma anche abbandono, in una tensione che si percepisce palpabile nei sette brani di questo ottimo The Beautiful Enabler, suddivisi equamente tra due composizioni per ciascun musicista e una improvvisazione collettiva.

L'apertura è affidata all'avvolgente "Acuppa", tema che sembrerebbe più veleggiare dalla parti di un William Parker che non del suo autore, Gerry Hemingway, e che già mette in tavola le carte con cui si gioca poi l'intera partita: un forte interplay, uno spazio elastico nel quale proiettare le aperture solistiche e condensare i momenti collettivi, un grande equilibrio/disequilibrio tra costruzione consapevole e istintività, ben esemplificato dall'improvvisazione collettiva di "Bearings", avventurosa anche negli squarci più lirici.

Molto efficaci anche le due composizioni di Dresser, "Flac" e la title-track, dotate di una propulsione quasi istintuale, mentre sono di Mahanthappa la amara ballad "Intone" e la più convulsa "I'll See You When I Get There", su cui il sassofonista dimostra non solo la conosciuta bravura, ma anche una maturità espressiva che altri contesti, pur di altissimo profilo, forse gli avevano negato.

Si chiude con un altro tema di Hemingway, "Meddle Music", che parte quasi come una polverizzazione del linguaggio dei tre, ma si avventura poi su un gioco di tensioni e rilasci di grande maestria. Un disco preziosissimo, da gustare poco a poco, oppure di un fiato. Ma da gustare!
