Ernie Krivda: The Art of the Trio
Per fortuna che c'è il produttore Bob Rusch a dare spazio al sassofonista di Cleveland Ernie Krivda visto che gli altri da un pezzo lo hanno dimenticato, dopo un inizio promettente. Eppure c'è poco da lamentarsi su quella che è la capacità di Krivda, non solo al sassofono, ma anche come compositore che segue i dettami dell'era bop, bravo ad usare famosi standards come base dei suoi brani.

Per la prima volta su disco Krivda segue la formula del trio, idea che venne fuori dopo un concerto forzatamente eseguito in questa formazione a causa dell'impossibilità del pianista di raggiungere il resto del gruppo. Con lui, due vecchi compagni di avventura che danno, specie a composizioni risalenti ad album precedenti, una bella interpretazione. Al solito c'è l'interessante voce strumentale del suo sassofono e la capacità improvvisativa su strutture precise, in cui Krivda si conferma sempre fantasioso ed abile a fare intuire in sottofondo gli accordi dei brani. Un procedimento di sicuro non nuovo, ma da lui usato con convinzione ed abilità.

La ritmica è formata da due musicisti esperti che lo seguono con attenzione. La concentrazione è sempre presente, in brani molto lunghi, che mai scadono nella banalità e nella ripetizione. Il trio ha una sua poesia, rispettano la base armonica dei brani e Krivda si adopera a costruire architetture complesse senza mai perdere il filo logico del discorso. Si tratta di un trio che ben conosce i ferri del mestiere, ma che ha il pregio di lasciarsi andare a seguire intuizioni di valore, linee melodiche spuntate da chissà dove, ritmi che a tratti seguono percorsi inusuali. Un bel modo, il loro, di dare un senso alla tradizione.
