Frank Carlberg: The American Dream
Si contano numerosi e piuttosto riusciti gli omaggi da parte del mondo jazzistico all'arte poetica di Robert Creeley. Ultimo in ordine di tempo quel So There a nome Steve Swallow, che vide esibirsi Creeley pochi giorni prima della sua scomparsa.

The American Dream è un poema in dodici parti basato su altrettante liriche di Robert Creeley, commissionato dalla Chamber Music America e musicato dall'ottimo pianista di origine finlandese Frank Carlberg. Al posto della voce profonda, dalla dizione spezzata del poeta scomparso, Carlberg ricorre ad una vocalist, da tempo partner fidata, come Cristine Correa. Che è istrionica quanto basta, non procura brividi lungo la schiena, ma sa il fatto suo e interpreta le parole di Creeley con bel piglio e autorevolezza.

E poi c'è la musica creata da un gruppo di altissimo livello. Il pianoforte di Carlberg, che ha più di una affinità con lo stile pianistico di Thelonius Monk, sostiene al meglio la componente ruvida e tagliente dei versi, a volte con semplici impulsi dissonanti, spesso attraverso fraseggi obliqui che creano un effetto straniante molto efficace.

Il sax tenore di Chris Cheek, ormai una garanzia di qualità, esalta la bellezza intrinseca della parola grazie ad un suono di altri tempi e ad un eleganza ingannevole, perché dietro l'aplomb del sassofonista di St. Louis, Missouri, si cela una mente fervida e ricca di inventiva. Michael Sarin è batterista tra i più sensibili e versatili in circolazione e John Hebert è punto di riferimento sicuro e fantasioso.

La musica segue l'andamento irregolare della metrica e delle parole, mettendo in campo varietà di situazioni e di riferimenti stilistici. Da segnalare la frizzante "We Get Crazy," "Names" con uno spettacolare intervento del tenore di Cheek, l'informalità controllata di "There...," il blues vischioso di "Sentences".

Intrigante.
