Over the course of 17 tracks, the Berlin based Marc Doffey Quintet sets out to create a suite filled with lyrical and dynamic soundscapes... and succeeds. Their debut album, Taking Direction, consists of compositions written by each individual band member and brief, improvised interludes.
By including compositions of each member, the Marc Doffey Quintet places a refreshing emphasis on the diversity and various personalities that determine the group's sound. In the jazz scenea place where it is dangerously easy to allow ego and showmanship to take the upper hand-such modesty and synergy are rare to find. The group's sound is a beautiful embodiment of the paradoxical concept of finding unity in multitude; by bringing out each band member's own unique style, the Marc Doffey Quintet attains its own cohesive individuality as a group.
Additionally, the freely improvised interludes offer a charming contrast with the melodic lines and lyricism that characterize the various composed pieces. Doffey's recognizably warm, round sound manages to blend beautifully with the crystal clear timbre of Pérez's voice, that floats and dances above the intricate, yet transparent textures of the rhythm section.
This young quintet is a true treat for the ears. Props to Marc Doffey for assembling such a fine set of musicians.

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
