The Jeff Hamilton Trio: Symbiosis
Con un pò di impegno si riesce a dare un pó di luce propria anche ad una formazione, quella del trio pianistico, in cui, specie sugli standards, non si sa bene che cosa dire che non sia stato detto. Spesso si copia il modello di successo, oppure si fanno operazioni filologiche, o si tira fuori un'atmosfera da jam session che su disco si fa ascoltare distrattamente.

Questa volta il leader è il batterista, che fa molto bene il proprio lavoro, cosí come lo fa il produttore, mettendo insieme un disco al di sopra della media. Jeff Hamilton si ritaglia pure qualche spazio solistico, nel suo "Samba de marteo," ad esempio, ma sa pure accompagnare con discrezione e presenza, guidando le esecuzioni. Non è il classico batterista che segna il tempo, e neanche il tipo fracassone che deve mettersi in mostra a tutti costi. Sa cosa fare con gli standard e sa guidare il gruppo così da rendere evidente la differenza con gruppi in cui il leader è il pianista.

Gli altri due sideman lo seguono con precisione ed il disco prende quota arrivando alla fine senza lasciare tracce di stanchezza esecutiva. L'assolo del leader sulla già citata samba, l'introduzione all'archetto del contrabbassista su "Blues in the Night" o il bebop finale di "The Serpent's Tooth," un classico di Miles Davis dal suo periodo Prestige, non danno mai tregua e si avverte quasi la brevità di un disco che dura quasi un'ora e che è costruito così bene da non fare stancare chi lo ascolta grazie ad ottimi arragiamenti e la totale assenza di routine.

Che cerca la novità farà bene a cercare altrove, tuttavia qui è all'opera un trio che, pure in un genere molto battuto come il mainstream, sa dire la sua con fervore e brillantezza.
