Un sestetto guidato dal pianista Simon Toldam esplora le dinamiche più sottili del linguaggio di ricerca prodotto dal jazz europeo più legato al camerismo contemporaneo. Toldam è attivo e molto apprezzato in Danimarca, dove ha vinto premi come leader orchestrale specie nel biennio 2006-2007, è attualmente componente del trio di Han Bennink e ha collaborato con i più bei nomi dell'improvvisazione storica. Ma la sua musica non persegue fini esteticamente estremi. Anzi, si sofferma sulla riflessione analitica: una linea melodica che si ripete, si sviluppa, torna su se stessa, si apre a ventaglio; volumi minimali dai quali si generano polifonie quiete, a volte per addizione di voci strumentali. Oppure temi di una bella varietà che emergono da introduzioni pianistiche come in "Blok," forse il brano migliore, dove Toldam si esprime brillantemente nelle ottave basse dello strumento.

Il gruppo comprende musicisti danesi, tranne Sture Ericson, noto sassofonista svedese della scena più radicale, solitamente protagonista, invece qui ben inserito nelle geometrie collettive. Molto interessante il trombone di Maria Bertel ed efficace il lavoro di Jimmy Nyborg alla tromba, specie nelle sequenze dove i contrappunti svettano.

Un lavoro nel complesso accurato, che privilegia la scrittura senza rinunciare a squarci di improvvisazioni controllate.
