Peppe Merolla: Stick with Me
Curiosa la storia di Peppe Merolla. Cresciuto in una famiglia di artisti, si è cimentato nel doppio ruolo di attore e musicista, registrando alcuni lavori come cantante - con il nick di Little Joe -, dedicandosi in seguito alla tromba nell'orchestra di Claudio Simonetti, fino a dar sfogo all'amore per la batteria. Passione che si è materializzata nel in questo debutto da leader, intitolato Stick with Me, un album realizzato con musicisti di riferimento di New York, dove oggi risiede, come Steve Turré (trombone), Jim Rotondi (tromba e flicorno), John Farnsworth (sax tenore) e Mike LeDonne (piano).

Delizioso il brano d'apertura "Naples," tutto giocato tra il ritmo africaneggiante impostato da Merolla e l'intreccio melodico dei fiati; non da meno "Ferris Wheel," pezzo dall'alto grado di ballabilità firmato - come del resto altri quattro brani in scaletta dei nove in scaletta - da John Farnsworth, tenorsassofonista in grado di svolgere con merito il ruolo di primo piano, soprattutto negli up-tempo.

La band si muove con disinvoltura in un repertorio che propone alcune divagazioni dal sapore latin ("Marbella"), la rilettura intensa del classico "Crazy" di Willie Nelson, qui arrangiato da Jim Rotondi, in un contesto generale catalogabile come hard-bop, mentre il leader, pur tecnicamente dotato, si ritaglia pochissimi angoli in solitudine.

Stick with Me è un disco ben suonato e che tiene compagnia per un'ora di jazz piacevole, anche se gli si può rimproverare una certa mancanza di originalità.
