Due anni fa, insieme col sassofonista—come lui svedese—Fredrik Ljungkvist, Mattias Risberg aveva dedicato a Carla Bley l'abum And Now the Queen (che già il titolo...); oggi trasferisce in solitudine in questo suo nuovo lavoro le sue passioni per le tastiere in senso lato, anche se poi, di fatto, Stamps è un album per piano solo (qua e là preparato) che un Moog Taurus a pedale rinforza in alcuni frangenti.

In un caleidoscopio di brani centrati sul colore (vedi i titoli), si parte con un paio di episodi di notevole impatto, guadagnando poi via via spazi più appartati, minimali, qua e là attraversati da un effettismo di regola appena accennato. Colpisce, nel prosieguo, il pianismo appuntito di "Viridian," o ancora la forte componente "preparata" del subito successivo "Phtalo," senz'altro fra le vette dell'album. Che prosegue per pennellate più larghe o più stringenti, sempre in una zona espressiva fatta di molti confini (e quindi, conseguentemente, di nessuno), propria di chi, senza un pregresso lavoro di scrittura né manipolazioni a posteriori, intende dar voce a un'ispirazione composita che svaria—dichiaratamente—dai grandi maestri del jazz a Stravinskij e Messiaen, Lennon e Zappa, Genesis e Yes.

Il risultato finale, pur non facendo gridare al miracolo, è di sicuro interesse.
